A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

It's funny being a book lover, a reader, someone who lives thousands of other lives in their own lifetime, because you're never sure what you're going to get when you pick up a book. Stories are amazing creatures, and they have the ability to affect you in unpredictable ways when you read them, sometimes causing you to smile or laugh, and other times causing you to become completely unglued. During my short life, I have only ever cried a few times while reading a book, though I'm usually able to hold my emotions back until I at least finish the page, chapter, or book itself, but not this time.

In my defense, I listened to A Monster Calls as I went on my morning walks with baby girl. I've found these walks are a fantastic way to get a lot of things done at once: Stay fit, get baby girl outside for a while, take May-May for a walk, and most recently read a book. I have very little time these days to actually pick up a physical book and read it, so I've decided to multitask and "read" one while I walk. This book was brilliantly recorded by Jason Isaacs, who has a lovely voice with a British accent to boot, and I actually highly recommend listening to it rather than reading it. Isaacs does a great job with the words, the timing and the characters, and it made the book feel incredibly real to me.

Maybe that's why I was a sobbing mess during my morning walk yesterday.

A Monster Calls synopsis:
At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Connor's been expecting - he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth.

This book literally changed me. Changed me from the inside out as I listened to this thirteen year old boy struggle with his mother's illness. I loved Conor. I loved him so much I thought I was going to tear apart inside. This sweet, darling little boy who is doing the best he can with what he has. This story made me take a step back and think about how we treat our loved ones, especially when they are struggling, no matter what that struggle is. This story taught me that sometimes things aren't fair, but that we can get through it with the help of others.

Five stars. Ten stars. Ten out of ten. Two thumbs up, with wads of tissues in both hands. This book was an absolute wonder, and I recommend it to everyone. Even as I type this I can feel that lump in my throat that I felt so often as I listened to Conor's story. Listened to the monster.

Apologies to the college students who walked by me yesterday morning, for the blubbering mess I was. Everything was fine, I promise.

Stories are amazing creatures.

A Happy Halloween

I hope everyone had a lovely Halloween! We took our little wolf to our ward Halloween party, even though it was pouring rain outside. May you all eat your leftover Halloween candy for me, since we didn't buy any...

The Birthday Girl

It is almost unfathomable to me that one year ago, we had a newborn.

Little Charlotte Grace, 8lbs 11oz on September 8th, 2014

For the full story of Charlotte's birth and all of the drama that went with it, you can click here, but this post is about baby girl's first birthday!

We really didn't do much, since I knew she wouldn't remember anything, but we did do a super fun photoshoot, which I gave a sneak peek of a about a week or so ago. I finally got her full photoshoot pictures back, and they are darling!
(Be warned, there are a lot of pictures!)

^ My personal favorite ^

Whew! Sorry for the picture overload, but I had to post all of them! She was a champ during the photoshoot, although she was very dainty when it came to the cake. She did not like getting her hands dirty. In the end, Ander and I had to smear the cake on her to get her to look messier! She had a blast, and so did we, and we can't believe she has been in our lives for a year! She loves to eat off of mama and papa's plates, climb all over May-May, open cabinets, close doors, shake her booty to music, and go walking in the mornings with her mama. She if officially the coolest little person we know, and we adore her.

A very happy birthday to little Charlotte Grace!

Booty Shaking

Apparently Charlotte shares her mama and Uncle Jobi's knack for rhythm, don't you think? And she's already shaking her booty at such a young age! We're doomed.

Birthday sneak peek

I had planned on making a birthday blog post on my darling Charlotte's first birthday, complete with super cute photoshoot pictures, but they aren't finished yet. So as I wait to get them back all ready to plaster all over this blog, I'm going to give you a sneak peek of the pictures I got last night. There are loads more coming, but this will have to tide us all over for the time being.

Stay tuned to see the rest!

Baby shoes

Charlotte wore real shoes for the very first time last Sunday, but incidentally she will NOT wear headbands anymore. She rips them right off of her head. *sigh* The shoes are cute, though. And the dress is courtesy of Grandma Janell!

The Meines come to Austin

A few weeks back, Ander's dad and his family came to see us in Austin, and we had a great time! It was the first time we'd had a big group of people come to visit since Charlotte was blessed, and it was lovely! We ate lots of yummy food, took a lot of pictures, and enjoyed ourselves very much. Thanks to Kelly, Ander's dad for the photos!

Ander took Hannah and Kelly out to Lake Bastrop to fish one morning, making them get up at five a.m. I love my husband, but I still don't know how he pulls himself from the comfort of our bed to go out on a body of water and reel in slimy, largemouthed fish so early in the mornings. Hannah and Kelly had a great time, though, despite the early rising.

A visit to the Lash Lounge was obviously a must while everyone was here. They finally got to see what I do in action at the place I've been working at for over four and a half years!

Shopping with Grandma Janell and Auntie Hannah wanted to take little miss Charlotte shopping at Target, (why not?) So unfortunately the men were dragged along in our wake as we delighted over teensy girl's clothes, and they took turns pushing the cart.

We at at a lot of delicious places while everyone was here, Cover 2 being one of our favorites. Their fried pickles are to die for.

We were able to finally visit Barton Springs, a natural spring in Austin that was COOOOOLD. Sixty-seven degrees all year round! But we spent a lot of time on the grass since someone had a medical emergency, although we have no clue what happened, and we had to wait for the ambulance to arrive before anyone could get back into the pool.

GPops has some serious selfie skills

We got some lovely photos after church on Sunday morning, and it was really nice to be surrounded by family during Sacrament Meeting for the first time since Charlotte's blessing.

The day everyone was supposed to fly home, I worked but Ander took the family to Bass Pro Shops up in Round Rock. If there is one place that sums up the word "America", it's the Bass Pro Shops. Ander got to show them his dream boat, the Nitro Z-7, along with the Fish Bowl, a full bowling alley inside the building complete with a restaurant. Charlotte isn't quite old enough to appreciate the aquarium they had either, but one of these days she will be.

The last day everyone was here, we went and had lunch at the Boathouse Grill, one of me and Ander's favorite places. Clearly the urge to take a bunch of selfies was too strong for GPops, and it was here that we said our goodbyes before I went back to work.

We had a great time with our Meine family, and we look forward to seeing you all next summer!!
